MODEL RELEASED. Large abdominal cancer causing severe distension of a 67-year-old woman's abdomen. This is a recurrence of a retroperitoneal liposarcoma. A liposarcoma is a cancer of fatty tissue. Retroperitoneal refers to the location of the cancer, behind the abdominal cavity (which is lined by the peritoneum). If a large cancer like this is easily isolated,it can be surgically removed. If not, then surgery will not be possible and chemotherapy can be used to reduce the size of the cancer, but the prognosis is usually poor | |
