MODEL RELEASED. Tongue cancer. Close-up of a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cancer on the tongue of a 49 year old woman. An SCC arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of squamous cells, flattened cells in the skin and mucous membranes. It causes the formation of a large,ulcer-like area (centre). Cancer of the tongue spreads rapidly, often to the lymph nodes in the mouth and neck. If it is diagnosed before it has reached the lymph nodes, surgical removal of the cancer may effect a cure. If it has spread to the lymph nodes, the prognosis is poor | |
