Swollen abdomen due to liver cancer. View of the swollen abdomen of an 18 month old boy caused by hepatomegaly (swelling of the liver) due to a hepatoblastoma (a type of liver cancer). Hepatoblastomas are a type of teratoma, cancers which contain tissues which are not usually found at the site of the cancer. These may include hair and even teeth. Hepatoblastomas are very rare, affecting less than one in a million people. They typically appear at about one year of age,and are highly malignant. If they are caught before they spread (usually to the lungs),chemotherapy and excision of part or all of the liver may provide a cure, but generally the prognosis is poor | |
