Multiple myeloma. Image of the spinal cord of an elderly woman affected by kyphosis (an excessive backward curvature of the spine) as a result of a multiple myeloma. Multiple myeloma is a malignant cancer which leads to uncontrolled proliferation and disordered function of cells called plasma cells situated in the bone marrow. Proliferation of the plasma cells within the bone causes pain and destruction of bone tissue. If vertebrae are affected they may collapse and lead to kyphosis and to paralysis if spinal nerves are compressed. Multiple myeloma also compromises the role that plasma cells play within the immune system,making the organism more prone to infections
