MODEL RELEASED. Paediatric nurse talking to a young boy with leukaemia. The boy is suffering from hair loss, one of the side effects of the chemotherapy being used to treat the disease. Leukaemia is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow & other blood-forming organs produce large numbers of immature or abnormal white blood cells (leucocytes). Cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs are used to destroy these cancer cells by inhibiting cell division, but they also affect normal cells, particularly those of the bone marrow, skin and stomach lining.
