Runner's knee. Close-up of cartilage in the knee of a patient with chondromalacia (runner's knee). This is a softening and degeneration of the protective cartilage around the patella (knee cap). It is usually caused by overuse or trauma, but may also be a result of arthritis. It causes pain and a grinding sensation when the knee is extended. Treatment is with rest and anti- inflammatory drugs. In severe cases where the patella has also become misaligned surgery may also be needed | |
