Chickenpox. Face and upper chest of a 50-year-old man infected with chickenpox. This airborne infectious disease is caused by the varicella- zoster virus. Two to three weeks after infection a rash appears on the skin and sometimes also inside the mouth and bronchial tubes. It consists of itchy spots that become fluid-filled blisters (as seen here) within a few hours. Most people are infected with chickenpox by the age of 10,and remain immune to it for the rest of their lives. Children usually suffer only a slight fever and recover after about 10 days, but adult symptoms are more serious and can include severe pneumonia with breathing difficulties | |
