Liver cirrhosis. Light micrograph of a section through a liver showing signs of cirrhosis. Dark blue fibrous bands are seen breaking up the structure of the liver. Healthy liver cells (hepatocytes, pink) are seen between the fibrous bands. Cirrhosis is a disease caused by chronic liver damage. This may be due to alcohol abuse, hepatitis (liver inflammation),bile duct defects and heart failure, but often no overall cause is found (cryptogenic cirrhosis). Cirrhosis may lead to jaundice, oedema (fluid accumulation in tissues) and confusion. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size | |
