Liver cirrhosis. Light micrograph of a section through liver tissue showing alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis. Fibrous scar tissue (green) has developed around liver lobules (grey/pink). Numerous fatty deposits (white) are seen in the lobules. The hepatocytes (liver cells) in the lobules are forming nodules of regenerating cells around the scar tissue. This gives a cirrhotic liver a knobbly appearance. Heavy alcohol consump- tion is the most common cause of liver cirrhosis in developed countries, although the condition may also be caused by hepatitis. Symptoms include mild jaundice, oedema, mental confusion and the vomiting of blood. Magnification unknown | |
