Chickenpox. Close-up of a vesicle (lesion) on the skin of a patient suffering from chickenpox. Chickenpox (varicella) is a common childhood disease that is rare and more severe in adults. Two weeks after infection, itchy red spots that blister (as seen here) appear on the trunk, upper arms and legs, face, and even inside the mouth. This rash is accompanied by fever. Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus which is spread by airborn droplets. Treatment includes paracetamol to relieve fever; in severe cases acyclovir (an antiviral drug) may be prescribed. Calamine lotion is often used to dry out and relieve the itchiness of these vesicles | |
