Chickenpox. Small white lesions on the back of an 11 year-old boy's mouth due to chickenpox. Chickenpox (varicella) is a common childhood disease that is rare and severe in adults. Two weeks after infection a rash (red,itchy spots that blister) appears on the trunk,upper arms & legs and inside the mouth and trachea causing a dry cough. This is accompanied by fever. Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus which is spread by airborn droplets. Paracetamol is taken to relieve fever; in severe cases acyclovir (an antiviral drug) is prescribed. Calamine lotion is often used to relieve the itchiness of the rash
