Chilblain. The swollen toe of a 75 year old female patient on beta-blockers. The toe is red and itchy due a chilblain. Chilblains are an excessive constriction of small blood vessels below the surface of the skin. In this case the chilblain is a side effect of taking beta-blockers. Beta blockers are drugs used to treat heart disorders, anxiety and an overactive thyroid gland. They reduce heart rate and air flow to the lungs and can reduce blood flow to the limbs, resulting in disorders such as chilblains. Chilblains are normally caused by cold weather affecting the limbs of the very young and very old | |
