Constipation. The swollen abdomen of an elderly woman with severe constipation. Constipation is the infrequent or difficult passing of faeces, which are typically hard and dry. The most common cause is insufficient dietary fibre, which is needed to stimulate the colon's muscular wall. In the elderly, weakness of the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles may prevent adequate bowel movements. Resisting the urge to defaecate (which may be caused by painful haemorrhoids) is also a cause. Constipation is usually harmless, but may occur as a symptom of more serious disorders, such as cancer of the intestine. Treatments include laxative drugs and increased dietary fibre intake | |
