Ulcerative colitis. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the human colon affected by ulcerative colitis. Inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membrane lining the large intestine occurs in this condition. Here, mucous glands (orange) with their openings are seen. They appear abnormally raised above the mucosa lining (pink),because the outer epithelial layer is absent. Ulceration has destroyed epithelial cells in this area. Ulcerative colitis causes abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and blood loss. The cause often is unknown. Treatment includes drugs and sometimes surgery.
