Ulcerative colitis. Specimen of a section of human colon (large intestine) affected by ulcerative colitis,an inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membrane lining the large gut. Here, the affected ridged mucous membrane is red & inflamed. Symptoms of ulcerative colitis include diarrhoea and abdominal pain; anaemia is a danger due to loss of blood through the faeces. It may increase the risk of colon cancer. Food allergies or an infective agent are possible causes; it is common in young and middle-aged adults. Diagnosis is by colonoscopy or barium X-ray. Treatment includes corticosteroid drugs to reduce inflammation; more advanced cases may require surgery (colectomy) | |
