A sebaceous cyst on the head of an elderly woman. Such a cyst consists of a large, smooth nodule under the skin which is also known as a wen if it occurs on the scalp. The cyst contains a yellow fatty material and commonly develops on the scalp, ear, face and genitals. Sebaceous cysts may grow very large and although harmless may become infected by bacteria. They are easily removed under local anaesthesia. (Compare with M130/180 which shows the same patient after the removal of the cyst) | |
