Liver cirrhosis. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the cell structure in a lobule of the liver, affected by cirrhosis. Hepatic cells (dark brown) surround blood carrying sinusoids (blue channels) in a three-dimensional network. The liver is a blood filtering organ; liver cells are specialized for cleaning the blood. However, typical in cirrhosis, fibres of connective tissue (light brown) have invaded the area damaging liver cells and their filtering ability and may even disrupt the blood flow. Causes of liver cirrhosis are many, including alcohol abuse and chronic hepatitis. Magnification: x1,680 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x2,700 at 4x5 inch size | |
