Liver cirrhosis. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the cell structure in a lobule of the liver, affected by cirrhosis. Hepatic cells (dark brown) surround blood carrying channels (blue); phagocytes (yellow) associated with tissue damage are seen in these channels. The liver is a blood filtering organ; liver cells are specialized for cleaning blood. However, typical of cirrhosis, connective tissue (light brown) has invaded this area damaging liver cells and their filtering ability and may disrupt the blood flow. Causes of liver cirrhosis include alcohol abuse and chronic hepatitis. Magnification: x1,875 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x3,000 at 4x5 inch size | |
