Breast fat cell death. Light micrograph of a section through breast tissue that is displaying cytosteatonecrosis (fat cell death). Fat released from necrotic fat cells provokes the formation of fibrous cystic tissues, leading to breast lumps. This extracellular fat is lost in the preparation of the sample, leaving spaces (white) at top left and bottom right. Necrosis is abnormal cell death. Adipose (fat) cells form much of the breast tissue. Necrosis of these fat cells is commonly due to trauma, but it can also be due to surgery or radiotherapy. Magnification unknown | |
