Breast cancer cells. Immunofluorescent light micrograph of a culture of breast cancer cells expressing a "death gene". These cells have been subjected to a short heat shock. This has caused bak protein (red) to move away from mitochondria (green and yellow). The bak has relocalized to the aggregates of endoplasmic reticulum (red-pink) and the nucleoli (pink regions within the blue nuclei). It is believed that the separation of the protective death gene from the lethal bak may initiate cell death. Immunofluorescence is a technique using antibodies to attach fluorescent dyes to cells. Magnification: x624 at 6x4.5cm size
