Mastitis. Close-up of the inflamed breast of a 36- year-old woman affected by mastitis during breast feeding. The inflammation of the breast tissue in mastitis is usually caused by bacterial infection. Bacteria most commonly enter the breast through damaged nipples in the first month of breast feeding. Symptoms include swelling, tenderness, pain, redness and engorgement of the breast with milk. Treatment usually includes the taking of antibiotics and painkillers. Expressing milk will relieve the engorgement. Breast feeding can be continued unless pus begins to drain from the nipple. Mastitis can also be caused by hormonal changes | |
