Chronic bronchitis, coloured X-ray. This condition almost exclusively affects smokers. It is often associated with emphysema, which is known as COLD (chronic obstructive lung disease). Bronchitis shows up as the faint streaky areas on either side of the spine. This is caused by inflammation of the lining of the bronchi, the air tubes in the lungs. Chronic bronchitis causes sputum,a yellow- green fluid, which is coughed up over several years. The lungs occupy the spaces either side of the spinal column (running vertically down centre),and are surrounded by the ribs (green). The heart (lower right) and diaphragm (across bottom) are seen | |
