Bowen's disease. Close-up of a dark,bruise-like lesion on the leg of an elderly woman, caused by a rare form of skin cancer called Bowen's disease. This condition typically produces red, scaly skin tumours on the face or hands. Called squamous cell carcinomas, these growths arise from the squamous cells of the epidermis - the uppermost layer of living cells in human skin. Unlike other types of carcinoma the tumours tend not to spread cancer cells to other parts of the body, although they occasionally do so. Treatment includes surgical removal, freezing,or burning the affected area. The disease is liable to recur | |
