Kaposi's sarcoma. Close up of the eye of a male AIDS patient, showing a Kaposi's sarcoma tumour on the lower eyelid. The tumour is rounded and dark red. Kaposi's sarcoma is a type of skin cancer that is common in victims of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome),but otherwise rare outside Africa. The tumours typically consist of blue-red nodules that at first appear on the feet and later spread to the rest of the body. In AIDS victims, the cancer is highly aggressive, spreading rapidly over the body and even affecting the gastrointes- tinal and respiratory tracts, where it can cause internal bleeding. Treatment includes radiotherapy and,in severe cases, chemotherapy | |
