It has caused a lack of space between the bones (centre right) and osteophytes (small lumpy bony growths) in the joint space (centre left). At the knee,the femur (upper right) articulates with the tibia (lower centre). The fibula (lower right) is also seen next to the tibia. This man also has rickets,a disease in which the bones do not form properly during childhood,caused by a lack of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps the bones to absorb calcium,which is essential for correct growth. Osteoarthritis is treated with painkiller drugs and physiotherapy
