Arthritic hands. Coloured X-ray of hands suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis. Here swelling and bone deformation (pink) is seen in finger joints between metacarpal and phalanges bones,and between phalanges bones themselves. Most joints are ragged due to bone erosion,with the thumbs also affected. Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common arthritic disease (after osteo- arthritis). It typically affects joints of the fingers,wrist,feet and hips. Treatment for pain and for restricted movement in the affected areas is by use of anti-inflammatory drugs; physiotherapy may help preserve joint movement
