Calliper splint in arthritis. A calliper splint fixed to the ankle of a patient suffering from osteoarthritis. A calliper splint consists of one or two metal rods attached to leather straps worn around a limb. The splint seen here keeps the ankle in a fixed position so that the patient can walk without flexing the joint. Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joint cartilage associated with ageing and mechanical wear. Loss of cartilage makes joints stiff and painful, reducing mobility. There is no cure for osteoarthritis so treatment is aimed at reducing pain and helping the patient cope with disability | |
