Non-septic monoarthritis (acute) of knee. Close up of both knees of a patient to show the swollen appearance of the knee on the left of the photograph (patient's right) which is unable to straighten fully. The skin on the outer side and upper edge of the knee cap is inflamed in the swollen joint and is localised to this area. The knee on the right has a normal appearance. Common causes for this acute form of non-septic monoarthritis are osteoarthritis and gout. The immediate treatment is with analgesia and rest.
