False colour scintigram (gamma camera scan) of the legs of a person suffering from arthritis affecting the left knee joint (right in image). Arthritis appears as brighter "hot spots" in the image. The image records the distribution & intensity of gamma radiations emitted from a radionuclide injected into the circulation prior to taking the scan which concentrates in the joints. A crystal scintillator resolves emitted radiations as flashes of light that are processed by a series of photomultipliers. Radionuclide concentration increases in the inflamed tissue surrounding an arthritic joint | |
