Thyroid tumour. Gross clinical specimen of a thyroid gland with an adenoma (non-cancerous tumour, centre left). The thyroid is an endocrine gland at the front of the neck, which produces hormones that control the body's metabolism. Adenomas may turn cancerous (malignant),but more commonly cause the thyroid to produce excessive quantities of thyroid hormones. This excess production (hyperthyroidism) can cause fatigue, palpitations, weight loss and intolerance of heat. Treatment involves partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy),followed by thyroid hormone drugs | |
