Acne. Artwork showing a section of human skin surrounded by skin bacteria,a cause of acne. Acne is a skin disorder in which the sebaceous glands and hair follicles become inflamed. The hair (brown) lies within a pit called a follicle. Halfway down the follicle on the right is a sebaceous gland (white) which produces oily sebum. If sebum blocks the follicle, bacteria (green, not to scale) may multiply and cause inflammation. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs and ultraviolet light. A coiled sweat gland (mauve),fat deposits (yellow),sensory nerves (green) and blood vessels (red and blue) can also be seen | |
