Alzheimer's disease. Colour Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) scan of a patient's brain with Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia). This is a horizontal section through the brain. Colour-coding is: high brain activity (yellow, red); low activity (grey, blue). The patchy appearance of areas of activity, and large areas of low activity indicate degeneration of brain tissue. Alzheimer's disease is a disabling disease of the elderly. In SPECT scanning a radioactive tracer is injected into the bloodstream to reveal metabolic activity in the brain.
