Ascites. The severely swollen abdomen of an elder- ly woman suffering from ascites as a complication of liver failure. Ascites is caused by the accumu- lation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity (the space between the inside of the abdominal wall and the outside of the abdominal organs). The swelling causes discomfort and can make breathing difficult if pressure is put on the diaphragm. Ascites can occur as a complication of many different conditions, including heart failure, kidney mal- function, liver disease and cancer of the periton- eum. Treatment depends on the underlying cause, but is likely to involve bed rest and restricted intake of fluid and salt | |
