In this section stained with Gomori's methenamine silver,tangles are visible as the elongated dark objects at centre-left and centre-right. Neurofibrillary tangles are masses of dark filaments present in cytoplasm of neurones; they are composed of twisted pairs of filaments probably derived from the nerve cell's microtubular system.
