Transmission electron micrograph of Lambda bacteriophages & a single Lambda prohead,or "petit" Lambda (top right). Bacteriophages are viruses that infect only bacterial cells. Lacking any reproductive machinery themselves, they infect bacteria & commandeer their apparatus for purposes of replication. The genetic material (DNA) of the phage is contained within the head,a 20-faced (icosahedron) figure made up of numerous subunits called capsomers. The head is attached to a tail, which in this species is noncontractile. Entry into the bacteria is achieved by enzyme action. Mag: X365,000 (at 10x8 size) | |
