False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Hepatitis B virus particles. The virus causes serum hepatitis,an acute inflammation of the liver. Various forms exist: Dane particles (spheres 40 nm diameter),smaller spheres (20nm diameter) & tubules of variable length. Serum hepatitis is transmitted by infected blood; infection risk factors are similar to those in AIDS. Symptoms of headache, fever & jaundice develop after an incubation period of 1-6 months. Diagnosis is confirmed by presence of Australia antigen in blood. Magnification: x42,000 at 35mm size,x84,000 at 6x7cm size | |
