False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a hepatitis B virus particle, the causative agent of what used to be termed serum hepatitis. The virus is transmitted through blood & blood products (contaminated syringes etc),and has an incubation period of 2-6 months. In severe cases chronic hepatitis may lead to liver cirrhosis and death. The virus was identified following the discovery in 1964 of the Australia antigen, which was later found to be a surface antigen of the protein capsid surrounding the DNA virus. Magnification: X 250,000 for 35mm size,X 500,000 for 6x7cm size. The false colour has been added to the original | |
