Mimivirus. Computer artwork of an Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APMV) particle, commonly known as the mimivirus. This virus consists of outer hairs,or fibrils, and a protein capsid (green) enclosing a core (orange) of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid),the virus' genetic material. The discovery of the virus in 1992 excited people due to its complex nature and the fact that it seemed to lie on the boundary between the living and the non-living. It's classification as a pathogen is tentative, but it is now thought that it may cause viral pneumonia | |
