Marburg virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Marburg virus,the cause of Marburg virus disease. The disease is also called Green Monkey or Vervet Monkey disease. These elongated viruses belong to the filovirus group. They are similar in appearance to,but antigeni- cally distinct from,the Ebola virus. The first outbreak occurred in Marburg,Frankfurt,Germany,in August 1967,killing seven people. Since then cases have occurred in Africa. Symptoms include high fever,diarrhoea,haemorrhage and a skin rash. Both Marburg and Ebola viruses cause similar symptoms in monkeys. Magnification: x30,000 at 5x7cm size. x104,000 at 6.5x9.5ins | |
