Herpes simplex virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of herpes simplex viruses in a cell nucleus. The inner membranes of the nucleus are orange. The outer layer (or capsid, yellow) of the viruses protects coils of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). DNA contains the genetic material necessary for replication of the virus in the body. The virus causes cold sores around the mouth, and another form of the virus causes genital herpes. They cause fluid-filled blisters which can spread the virus if touched. Magnification unknown | |
