Measles encephalitis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a human brain cell with encephalitis (inflammation) caused by the measles virus. Viruses take over the metabolism of the cells they infect in order to manufacture new virus particles. Here, the cell nucleus (circle at centre) is full of newly-manufactured viral nucleocapsid, stained with gold-labelled measles virus antibody. It appears red in this micrograph. The nucleocapsid consists of the nucleic acid or genetic material of the virus,in the case of measles RNA,and a protein coat or capsid. The viruses are approximately 90-300+ nanometres.
