Epstein-Barr viruses,EBV. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of Epstein-Barr viruses. Here, seen sectioned through, the viruses resemble circles with DNA genetic material in the centre (yellow). The Epstein-Barr virus, also known as "human herpes virus 4",is 1 of 5 herpes viruses that attacks humans. In developed countries,EBV causes infectious mononucleosis,an infection of young adults leading to fever and sore throat and swollen lymph nodes. In Central Africa,EBV may lead to Burkitt's lymphoma,a facial cancer in children. EBV always infects B-lymphocyte blood cells. It is a common viral infection, and usually harmless.
