Herpes virus. Coloured transmission electron micr- ograph (TEM) of a herpes virus particle. At centre is the virus with a dotted surface composed of protein units called capsomeres. Within this shell is viral DNA. The virus is surrounded by an envelope with a fringe of surface spikes. Herpes viruses include a number of types that cause infection in humans: herpes simplex types 1 & 2 (oral and genital lesions),Epstein-Barr virus (glandular fever),herpes zoster (chickenpox) and cytomegalovirus (various infections). Examined under the electron microscope, there are no obvious differences in appearance of these various types. Magnification: x90,000 at 35mm size | |
