False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a T4 lymphocyte infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV),the causative agent of AIDS. The virions,or virus particles,are the red and green dots contained within the vesicles,those otherwise yellow irregular regions. Depletion of the population of T4 lymphocytes through HIV infection is the main reason for the destruction of a person's immune system in AIDS.
