False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a group of five Herpes simplex viruses. The capsid or protein coat of each virus is seen; it consists of 162 capsomers (protein units that resemble dots) in an icosahedral shape. Herpes simplex is a DNA virus,occurring in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical,but are biochemically different. Herpes simplex is a human parasite,causing a variety of infections including whitlows and cold sores of the mouth and genitalia.
