False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cell fibroblast infected with the Herpes Simplex Type I virus (HSV Type I). This image was made 24 hours after infection, and shows virus particles (small spherical blebs) covering the surface of the cell body & its projecting limbs. Infection with HSV Type I causes oral cold sores & a form of conjunctivitis & may result in genital herpes infections, although these are more usually due to HSV Type 2.
