Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Herpes simplex virus. The symmetrical capsid or protein coat of the virus is seen at centre,surrounded by an irregularly-shaped envelope of lipoprotein. The double-membrane envelope is thought to assist the virus to penetrate & infect cells. Herpes simplex is a DNA virus,occurring in two forms: type 1 and 2. These types are visually identical,but are biochemically different. Herpes simplex is a para- site of humans,causing a variety of infections including whitlows and cold sores of the mouth and genitalia.
