False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a Herpes simplex virus. The symmetrical central capsid (red) is seen surrounded by an irregularly- shaped envelope of lipoprotein (light blue) some 250nm in diameter. H. simplex is one of the herpesviruses. These contain DNA,and cause latent infections in man and animals. H. simplex can cause acute conjunctivitis or inflammations of the mouth or genitalia, although some infected patients may not show any symptoms. Genital herpes is caused by H. simplex type 2,and is a recurring sexually-transmitted disease that is difficult to treat. Magnification: x67,250 at 6x4.5cm size | |
