False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing mature particles of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV),the cause of AIDS. Virus particles (in orange) are positioned between two T-lymphocytes,the host cell type in AIDS. Viral replication occurs inside the infected T- cell. New virus particles initially appear as bumps in the host cell membrane which enlarge & finally become detached. Newly-formed virus particles undergo maturation, with the appearance of a characteristic, elongated nucleoid (the dark brown feature visible in centre of some virus particles).
