False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of particles of the rabies virus. The virus can be transmitted to man by the bite of an infected animal,typically a dog or cat. Rabies (hydrophobia) is an acute & often fatal disease of the central nervous system. The viruses multiply in the nerve cells of the brain producing cytoplasmic inclusions called Negri corpuscles.
